Why is the ban still in place?
Despite the lifting of sanctions in July 2025, platforms like Meta, TikTok, Google, and LinkedIn still block geo-targeting for Syria. This hinders:
- Recruiting students in Damascus or Homs for training programs
- Promoting in-country stores and services
- Launching paid national education or development campaigns
Reasons?
- Lack of modern infrastructure (electricity, internet)
- Lack of payment systems and legal safeguards
- Migration of technical talent
- International platforms’ reticence in the face of institutional realities
